I don't know why it surprises me so much that there is rampant hypocrisy going on, especially regarding all of the sexual assault and abuse allegations being bandied about. Politicians seem to suffer from this the most these days, or at least the manifestation is more noticeable I guess, and it takes many forms. Why, for example, do some Republicans want to crucify Bill Clinton for all of his various dalliances or most recently Al Franken who groped an anchor woman and model on a USO tour, and at the same time they appear to excuse or overlook the alleged history of Roy Moore? Democrats aren't any better by the way. There were plenty of Dems who minimized Clinton's behavior, for example. Why are some victims accounts so readily believed while others are discounted as fiction or fake news? Why were Bill Clinton's accusers automatically validated as factual while every woman who alleged inappropriate behaviour by Donald Trump is simply lying? It seems to me that the same standard should be applied to everyone, or is that too much to ask these days? I think anyone who commits an act of sexual assault or uses their position of power to gain sexual favors should reap the consequences regardless of political party or station in life. No one should be able to exert that kind of influence or harm against another person. This kind of thing happens in the workplace all the time unfortunately. I remember my own experience being pursued by a supposedly straight married superior at work and feeling like I had to succumb to the advances or else my position might be threatened. I'm not proud to admit that, but it happened nevertheless. I never spoke up or told anyone for fear of retribution. Who would have believed me at the time? So I understand all too well the victim's point of view! Yes, there are false accusations that take place I'm sure, whether it be for political or monetary motivations. But when so many people share the same experience and come forward in numbers, I have to believe there is something to the allegations and they should be given the benefit of the doubt.Another story that just broke over the past few days is that of anti-LGBT family values conservative Ohio state legislator Wes Goodman being ousted and forced to resign after having been caught having sex with another man in his office. Here's another example of moral and sexual hypocrisy I just don't understand. Why are some of those people who are vehemently opposed to the rights of the LGBT community the same ones who are practicing it themselves? Does it go back to that old saying do as I say not as I do? Can't we all have our rights and agree to disagree? It wasn't that long ago that another similar right wing conservative who oversaw a gay deprogramming center was caught employing male escorts. Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart had that fall from grace after being caught with prostitutes, albeit that was in the heterosexual context. It seems that more and more these days the ones who are throwing the biggest and most prejudiced and bigoted stones live in some pretty big glass houses! I wish we could get to a place in society that we can accept each other whoever we are, whoever we choose to love, and appreciate that we are all human beings with a rich and diverse experience. Don't even get me started on racial issues and white supremacy! What happened to judge not lest ye be judged or let he who is without sin cast the first stone? You would think that so called Christians would take these commands to heart, but I guess some just can't. They feel superior and free to pass judgement on those who are different from or disagree with them. What truly chaps my ass is that so many people who fall into this category are politicians who feel they have the right to legislate and force their own beliefs onto everyone else. Don't we as a society have bigger fish to fry like poverty, education and health care? When can we just appreciate and embrace the beauty and benefits of our diversity? We come to the table from all sorts of various backgrounds and experiences in life and we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of these differences. Perhaps one day we will get there; I certainly hope and pray that we do! In the meantime I'll get off my soapbox for now; who cares what I think anyway?
